Before Tiny

After graduating high school, I was employed by the Province of Ontario in a variety of progressively responsible positions between 1967 &1998. Starting in the field as an apprentice electrician, I carried out the roles of maintenance mechanic, linesman, traffic control technician and certified electrician construction and maintenance. I then moved up to the Ministry of Transportations head office as a lighting designer, carrying out lighting and traffic signal designs for highways across Ontario. I also designed parking lot lighting for GO Stations.

In 1975 when GO Transit (now Metrolinx) became a Crown Corporation, I moved into the position of Supervisor, Electrical/Mechanical Design and Maintenance and within five years moved up to Manager, Plant Maintenance. Over the last ten years of my 31-year career I served as Director of Property Management. In this position I oversaw the day-to-day operations of all stations and support facility operations (maintenance, ticket sales, customer services, advertising, property leasing/acquisition and disposal).

My portfolio included over 50 facilities and my staff dealt with over 50,000 customers and 30,000 parked cars daily. I was responsible for annual capital/operating budgets of over $50Million; annual revenues of over $100 Million and over 300 unionized and management staff. As a member of senior management, I also participated in labor negotiations and arbitrated grievance hearings.

Throughout my career with GO Transit, I was an active member of the Building Owners and Managers Association of the Greater Toronto Area, (BOMA Toronto) representing the commercial property sector. I was elected to the Board of Directors in 1991, served as Director for eight years and as its President from 1996-1998. From 1998-1999 I had the role of Past President and Secretary Treasurer of BOMA Canada.

In 1998 I retired from GO Transit and created Harmony Management Services to allow me to use my education and experience as a consultant in the industry. My first assignment was to complete a facility audit of all property assessment offices in Northern and South – Western Ontario in anticipation of the transfer of responsibility from the Ontario Realty Corporation to the newly created Ontario Property Assessment Corporation (now MPAC).

In August 1999 I was retained by BOMA Toronto in the role of Executive Vice President and carefully guided the organization in both growth and prosperity for the next ten years. I increased financial reserves from $500 K to over $1 Million and raised the commercial association ranking from 5th to 2nd largest in North America.

In 2009 I was presented with the prestigious BOMA Canada Presidents award at the BOMA Canada National Conference in Montreal and in 2010 received BOMA life membership in recognition of over 28 years of service at the local, national and international levels.

In 2010 I returned to the consulting world assisting BOMA Toronto and BOMA Canada using my event management and extensive contact base in organizing their 2010 and 2011 BOMEX National conferences in Toronto and St. John’s Nfld. respectively.

My Past Accomplishments

Tiny needs someone with creativity and a record of accomplishments. The following are only some of my most meaningful.

As Director of Property Management at GO Transit:

• I established lighting design criteria for all stations which included installing timers on parking lot lights, so they did not burn in nonoperational times saving not only power but costs.
• Assisted the Engineering department in the design and construction of all GO Transit facilities through the redevelopment and expansion program in the GTHA;
• Eliminated heating in non-insulated platform shelters saving millions in capital and operating dollars and megawatts of electricity over the years.
• I introduced the reserved pay parking program which currently generates over $1 Million in non-fare revenues for Metrolinx annually.
• I also worked with the Adult Rehabilitation Centres (ARC Industries) in Peel, York and Durham Regions to implement a bus shelter cleaning program and eventually transferred ownership of the shelters to the individual municipalities. This saved GO Transit millions in capital and operating expenses over the years and gave a great work opportunity for a large number of individuals who would have otherwise been overlooked.

As Executive Vice President of BOMA Toronto;

• I negotiated a $75 M. conservation demand management (CDM) award winning program with the Ontario Power Authority in 2006. I then oversaw its development and implementation which resulted in retrofits of the lighting and energy systems of many commercial and industrial buildings in the GTHA and megawatts of energy taken off the grid. Not to mention the commissions generated to BOMA Toronto.
• I successfully arranged for the BOMA International Annual Conference to be held in Toronto in 2004. Even with the looming SARs issue, I convinced the powers that be in Washington D.C. to move forward. The conference was a huge success with over 1,500 delegates attending. Profits generated by the conference allowed us to establish a $100,000.00 annual bursary program with Ryerson University.
• I increased reserves from $500 K to over $1 Million and raised the commercial association ranking from 5th to 2nd largest in North America.
• I spearheaded the development and implementation of the BOMA Canada BOMA BESt National commercial building environmental management program which was recently adopted by BOMA International in the U.S.
• I developed and delivered the annual Energy & Environment Forum
• I developed and instituted the BOMA Toronto certificate of building excellence program and delivered the annual Building of the Year, Pinnacle and Earth Awards program and dinner;
• I revamped the Corporate Sponsorship Program generating additional annual revenues of over $250,000.00;
• I retired from BOMA Toronto on December 31st 2009.

In Tiny

In 2011, along with wife Cathy, we purchased a lot in the Lafontaine Beach area of Tiny Township and constructed our current residence on Forest Circle. Cathy was in the 20th year of operating a successful home – based, full-service travel agency (TPI Harmony Travel Services) with over 200 clients across Canada when COVID -19 hit in 2020. It decimated the travel industry, and we were left with no alternative but to close our doors in August of that year.

• November 2015, I initiated and formed the Lafontaine AreaS Homeowners Association (LASHA) which serves the designated shoreline community between the 18th and 15th Concessions
• Regularly attended meetings of Tiny council or watching on YouTube and keeping local community members up to speed on issues through monthly newsletter (LASHA Currents).
• Provide the reports on Council for the Tiny Cottager.
• In January 2017, I was appointed to Tiny Townships Lafontaine Beach Master Plan Implementation Committee (LAMP) and elected chair. Due to the efforts of this committee the following was accomplished:

The LA Beach Park now boasts:

• children’s accessible playground and walkways.
• bocce court
• pavilion
• washrooms
• accessible walkways

Plus, over several years, in cooperation with the Township and SSEA, our LASHA volunteers removed over 100 waste bags of invasive spotted knapweed from the beach area.

Other LASHA accomplishments include;

• Installing benches at 5 beachfront locations;
• Installing a large welcome sign at the top of the hill on the 16th Concession promoting our beautiful beaches and a 40 KMH limit;
• Coordinated two meet the candidate sessions for the 2022 municipal elections;
• Lobbied council about poor road conditions resulting in a significant portion of our community roads now being addressed;
• Approached Council in June 2023 to address the speeding issue by instituting a 40 KPH limit on TBRN, marking of the bike lanes
• Lobbied for community safety zones and Automates Speed Enforcement;
• Continued working with the Tiny Township Residents Alliances (TTRA) efforts to have council re-think its approach to the administrative building through the “Stop the Build” campaign;
• Through our membership in the Federation of Tiny Township Shoreline Associations (FoTTSA), provided full reports on all council meetings via the Tiny Cottager bi-annual print newsletter and monthly Flash e-newsletter;
• Requested improvements to the beach access at the 15th Concession with permanent improvements made in 2025.
• Supported FoTTSA in its opposition to the extreme parameters of the shoreline by-law.
• April 2019 was appointed to the new Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and elected Chair.
• Elected to the FoTTSA Board of Directors from 2022 to 2024 and served as a Director and Chair of the Governance Committee.

As can be seen, I have been deeply involved with the community over the past 10+ years.
